Special Session - Tropical Stream Ecology: Biodiversity in an Era of Global Change I
Global changes throughout the tropics are affecting the diversity and dynamics of tropical streams. Ranges of seasonal, annual, and inter-annual variations in precipitation and runoff are predicted to increase in response to climate change and land-use changes. Intense rainfall associated with the predicted increases in hurricanes is expected to alter habitats, increase washout of leaf litter, and affect nutrient cycling. Predicted increases in droughts are likely to change dominance relationships among existing species and perhaps lead to formation of more intermittent streams. Changing abiotic conditions will affect streams that already differ greatly in their diversities and ecosystem dynamics given the many types of tropical streams.
