Education and Outreach at the Annis Water Resources Institute

Alan D. Steinman, Annis Water Resources Institute, Grand Valley State University, Lake Michigan Center, 740 W. Shoreline Dr., Muskegon, MI 49441

Integrating research, education, and outreach is at the heart of the Annis Water Resources Institute’s (AWRI) mission.  Examples of how faculty and staff at AWRI uphold this mission include: 1) the Water Resources Outreach Education Program for schools and community groups.  Hands-on science programs, involving water and sediment quality sampling, coupled with instructional lessons, are provided on AWRI’s two research and education vessels, the D.J. Angus and the W G. Jackson.  Over 115,000 students and others have experienced the Great Lakes and adjoining waters through this program; 2) involvement as water resource experts in state and local activities.  Many AWRI scientists serve this important role; my role in Michigan’s Groundwater Conservation Advisory Council is used to illustrate how science is being used to help develop water policy in Michigan; and 3) communicating science issues to the public.  A monthly radio program shows how this is done in west Michigan.
