How can benthic ecology contribute to conservation science and practice?

Catherine M. Pringle, Institute of Ecology, University of Georgia, Athens, GA 30602

Rapidly accelerating threats to freshwater species and resources are being accompanied by rapid progress in scientific approaches that can be applied to conservation problems.  Development of new technologies, new information resources, and new conceptual frameworks are vastly increasing the range of potential conservation applications of ecological science.  For instance, conceptual frameworks that explicitly consider human activities, behaviors, social structures, and needs; or the two-way links between biodiversity and environmental quality are transforming the field.  We will review a few especially promising new developments.
