Special Session - Intermittent Rivers: Global Phenomena and Unexplored Riverscapes I
Intermittent rivers are often associated with arid regions and with zero-order tributaries in mountainous terrain. In reality, naturally-intermittent rivers are common in alpine, polar, boreal, temperate and tropical regions, and are particularly abundant in karst and alluvial terrains. Naturally-intermittent rivers, like many “extreme environments”, are fertile sites for ecological discovery. But these rivers are at risk of environmental degradation and elimination, in part because their ecological values are unrecognized. In contrast to naturally intermittent rivers, anthropogenic intermittent rivers (perennial rivers that have become intermittent following impoundment or surface water or groundwater abstraction) are increasingly common features in catchments under high water demand. Anthropogenic intermittence is likely to increase in regions experiencing climatic drying trends. This session will highlight the unique ecological properties that characterize intermittent rivers, and the roles of extreme hydrological variability in controlling ecological processes. We will also explore the roles of climate variability and human appropriation of water in driving changes in intermittence, and the ecological consequences of those changes.
