Special Session - Patterns in Stream Ecosystem Functioning Across Bioclimatic Regions I
The International Profiles Committee is organizing a special session on susceptibility of stream ecosystem response variables to climate change. Accumulating evidence of climate change highlights the need to understand the implications for the structure and function of stream ecosystems. Evaluation of how climate-related factors influence ecosystem functional responses can provide an insight to this issue. One approach is to contrast functional responses, or examine the existence of consistent patterns across bioclimatic regions. In addition, we need to understand the susceptibility of different functional responses (e.g. metabolism, organic matter processing, nutrient retention, food webs) to climate change. Although the session emphasizes studies addressing variation across bioclimatic regions, it also welcomes studies on the variation across microclimate conditions within a given region. This session should bring together researchers studying different aspects of stream ecosystem functioning and set up a platform for discussion of existing knowledge, current gaps and future needs of studies across bioclimatic regions. As such, we acknowledge that the session should benefit considerably from the broad international representation of participants at NABS meetings, whose contribution will certainly expand the range of bioclimatic regions considered.
