Interactive identification keys in aquatic insect taxonomy: New developments and challenges

Ralph W. Holzenthal, Department of Entomology, University of Minnesota, 219 Hodson Hall, 1980 Folwell Ave., Saint Paul, MN 55108

The recently published 4th edition of an Introduction to the Aquatic Insects of North America included a CD-ROM containing an interactive key to aquatic insect orders constructed using the software Lucid 3.4. Interactive keys provide a very different interface and experience for the user when compared to more “traditional” dichotomous keys. While dichotomous keys are often chided for being user-unfriendly, electronic interactive keys are not without their own problems, both to the key builder and to the user. The builder is confronted with learning a new, technologically sophisticated software application as well as needing some capability in digital image editing, web authoring software, and an understanding of servers and data transfer. The user is challenged by unfamiliarity with the user interface, inefficient hardware, or operating system issues. Tips for overcoming these challenges will be discussed. An updated, on-line version of the key, including an illustrated glossary, is now available. The same key was also constructed in Lucid Phoenix, an application that enables dichotomous keys to be accessed electronically. The Lucid software now comes with an “on-line” player that does not require the Java plug-in. These and other new developments in interactive key technology will be discussed.
