Special Session - Freshwater Biomonitoring with Macroinvertebrates in East Asia I
The history and current status of efforts to implement macroinvertebrate biomonitoring protocols for pollution of surface waters in East Asian countries will be the focus of this session. Impediments to such biomonitoring include (1) lack of knowledge of the macroinvertebrate fauna and their tolerance values in most countries of Oriental Asia, especially of the aquatic immature stages; (2) few research programs and formal training opportunities for biomonitoring in Asian universities; (3) scarcity of high-quality microscopes and other necessary equipment in some countries; and (4) limited government understanding and support for biomonitoring, with employment of few skilled regulatory staff, lack of training opportunities for them, and persistence of old and unreliable biomonitoring protocols. A recently established regional network, the Aquatic Entomological Society of East Asia (AESEA) and several major recent publications are helping to coordinate and promote this science and technology in East Asia. Anyone working in Asian freshwater ecosystems who is familiar with biomonitoring efforts in these countries will be welcome to participate in the session by contacting the organizer.
