Freshwater Aquatic Invertebrate Identification Guide

Charles Riley Nelson, Ph.D. and Sarah Walker, Undergraduate. Department of Integrative Biology, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT 84602

Our Freshwater Aquatic Invertebrate Identification Guide is an illustrated, computerized, dichotomous key for the aquatic invertebrates of western North America available on compact disc. Insects are covered most thoroughly, but the phyla Mollusca, Annelida, Crustacea, Platyhelminthes, and Nematoda can be identified as well. The Phylum, Class, Order and Family keys were written for broad applicability throughout western North America while those to Genus are limited to Utah taxa. The format is similar to print keys, but usable on any level from sixth graders to serious scientists because of extensive digital features. Features such as thousands of linked illustrations, a built-in glossary, and the digital collection record make the program a step forward for collectors, students, and professional biologists.  The Guide follows new paths to more efficiently identify aquatic taxa and we have extensively edited, improved, and tested them for accuracy and clarity.  Students with varied levels of aquatic and entomological knowledge have used the program to successfully identify specimens from personal and professional collections. This confirms the accessibility advantages of the program over traditional print keys.  We have current plans to produce a second version with more supplemental information on general morphology, individual taxa, and broader geographic coverage.
