The Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network (CABIN) is a national program developed by Environment Canada for consistent and comparable biological monitoring and assessment of freshwater. It is based on a network of networks approach to developing reference conditions for assessment. Multiple partners will contribute to and make use of the reference data as well as report on the assessment of sites for reporting on the status of freshwater in Canada. The consistency and comparability of the data relies on the ability of the CABIN users to perform to a satisfactory level during all components of a bioassessment program. Therefore, Environment Canada is currently implementing a national training program to provide CABIN users with the assurance that the accuracy of results is within controlled and acceptable limits. Due to the size of Canada and the number of potential users, a sustainable national program must reach anyone across the country at anytime. With the assistance of the AUSRIVAS program, we have developed an online CABIN training course. In the development of this program, we conducted a nationwide stakeholder survey to assess the needs, interests, and concerns of potential stakeholders about implementing such a program through this online system.
